Scottish FA Heading Guidelines FAQ's
The Scottish FA introduced heading guidelines following research linking former footballers to higher rates of neurodegenerative disease. While not banning heading outright, the guidance encourages reduced heading in youth football and phased introduction by age. It covers safe practice, concussion protocols, reporting poor practice and ongoing research into neck strengthening. Coaches are supported through training programmes, and the guidance is monitored and reviewed regularly to prioritise player welfare and ensure safe football development for all age groups

Scottish FA Heading Guidelines
The Scottish FA heading guidelines provide age-specific recommendations for introducing heading in youth football. Heading is prohibited in training for primary-aged players, with a gradual and limited approach introduced at secondary levels. Emphasis remains on skill development, safety and reduced heading frequency using lightweight balls. The document includes concussion protocols and stresses ongoing coach education. These guidelines are part of a wider effort to prioritise player welfare, promote safer training practices and support long-term player development across all youth age groups.
